It's hard to say when the "Southern Nationalist Movement" began. After the War for Southern Independence many tried to keep the dream alive in various ways however after nearly a century and a half many organisations and obviously people gave up.

The modern day Southern/Confederate Nationalist Movement really began to be created in the late 80's and early 90's.

Around 1992 the Confederate Society of America was created.

In 1994 the League of the South (LoS) was created. It was made up of around 40 professors, pastors, authors, farmers and "regular guys". During the flag fight in South Carolina the LoS took center stage and people began to notice it, after a while the LoS became the "flagship" of the movement with between 9-15,000 members.

Around 1998 the Southern National Committee was formed, it was created by the LoS and various other people. It's objective was to find out the feasibility of having a "Southern Party" later in 1999 THE Southern Party was formed. Between 1999 and 2000 the Southern Party began to fall apart due to internal conflicts, the "old' Southern Party was finally dissolved in full by 2003. Several Southern "parties" are now in existence. The SP of South Carolina, the SP of Georgia and the Southern Independence Party of Tennessee are the most active of these. There are several other parties however they have been rather inactive for some time now. The largest "organisation" of political parties is the Federation of States however they have yet to position themselves in every Southern State.

From late 2003 to the present the various SP's, SIP's and the LoS have tried to build up membership and expand their ideas and reach through out the South. As of 2004 the LoS and SIP TN are now trying to organize themselves more efficiently and are trying to create more chapters. The SP of Ga and the SP of SC are both seeking ballot access.

I would now like to distinguish the 2 movements in the "Southern Movement"

The Southern Heritage Movement is a movement to defend Southern Heritage; it is non-political and has very little affiliation with the Southern Nationalist Movement. Groups apart of the SHM are the Sons of Confederate Veterans (31,000 members) the United Daughters of the Confederacy (22,000 members) the Children of the Confederacy (2,500 members), the Military order of the Stars and Bars (5,000 members) and the Order of the Confederate Rose. Total estimate 55,000 members.

The Southern Nationalist Movement is a movement that seeks to restore the Confederate States of America. The main organisations in the SNM are the League of the South (15,000 members), the Southern Party of South Carolina, the Southern Party of Georgia and the Southern Independence Party of Tennessee (500 members) the total estimate size of the SNM including the inactive parties, orgs. Etc. is around 22,000
